Station Biologique Roscoff in 1908 Description: As far back as 1908, the Roscoff lab was very well-supported compared to other facilities in France. Charles Atwood Kofoid then Professor of Zoology at the University of California (when Berkeley was the only campus!) was one of the founders of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. In the summers of 1908 and 1909 he visited Europe with the express purpose of visiting and gathering detailed information on existing marine stations with an eye towards the construction and organization of Scripps. The base photograph of this image was scanned from our (Station Zoologique, Villefranche-sur-Mer) copy of Kofoid's published report: Kofoid, C.A. 1910. The Biological Stations of Europe. United States Bureau of Education Bulletin No. 4, Whole Number 440. The scanned images were edited using Photoshop. Some of the original photographs are in the Scripps Archives.
